At the heart of every strong community lie distinctive pieces of that community's heritage. These local treasures of regional and national importance, provide a link to the community's past, and when properly nurtured and valued, are a door to its future as well.
The Assumption Heritage Trust Foundation Master Plan will set a new framework for growth for the Campus and seeks to define a partnership between Assumption Church, the City of Windsor, and the University of Windsor, whereby the open space fabric will become a resource for the surrounding community.
The Master Plan builds upon the goal of creating a "green campus" in an urban context while providing a destination site for the public at the gateway entrance to Canada.
The design approach is to preserve, protect and celebrate nature, historic and cultural features. It will build upon them to define key elements to anchor and unify the campus through cultural landscape in the form of themed public gardens.
A new Heritage/Orientation Centre will promote learning and heritage programming.
Assumption Church is one of the most beautiful and magnificent heritage buildings in Ontario. It is a fine example of the gothic revival style of architecture, executed with remarkable sophistication and stylistic integrity. The interior is rich with a "Caen" marble altar; hand carved wood pulpit and statue (which are the only known indigenous French-Canadian carvings in Ontario) elaborate painted murals, fleur-de-lis ceramic tile, and candelabra pendant light fixtures.
The Church's interior acoustics have provided an ideal venue for concerts enjoyed by the general public and by the University of Windsor School Of Music.
Local citizens and visitors alike enjoy Assumption Church appreciating its gifts as a living museum with roots that extend back to the founding peoples of Canada.
