Assumption Public Gardens Initiative

There are a variety of public gardens provided to recognize and honour important individuals and events while encouraging learning, contemplative reflections, relaxation. The public gardens will provide a distinctive and significant framework for Assumption defined through dedications and story-telling within the landscape.

The Public Gardens represent a return of the campus to its natural purpose — a green and vibrant gathering place for the community. These distinctive gardens come together to paint a picture of our community’s highest ideals: the Mothers garden, dedicated to all Mothers, and the Children’s garden, a child—friendly place to discover, experience and love our world through gardening.

More than symbols, these gardens will be a gathering place for family and friends who live in Windsor and those who visit from afar.

Amphitheatre

The Amphitheatre will blend with natural topography to provide an exceptional gathering and meeting place, quieter places for learning and social exchange at the foot of the University of Windsor Campus.

An open-air venue creating an area that amplifies sound, the amphitheatre at Assumption is ideal for musical or theatrical performance — as it is designed so that all spectators have an unrestricted view of the entire theatre.

Children’s Discovery Garden

Imagine a Children's Garden — where education grows! Our Children's Discovery Garden will allow all visitors to Assumption the opportunity to come face to face with nature through fun and interactive, hands—on learning experiences. The garden will encourage a child's instinctual connection to the natural world and their environment, opening up endless pathways to discovery.

Visitors can learn about the four ancient elements — Fire, Water, Earth and Air — the raw elements that fuel the plant world, and through plant growth, give rise to the oxygen, food, resources and habitants that sustain human life.

Parents and grandparents can watch their children from shaded benches in the garden’s center. See, taste, touch, hear and smell — Experience the Sense of Wonder of the Children's Discovery Garden!

Community Greens

The vibrant environment originally attracted settlers who saw the beauty and unique advantages to the native plant and animal life of the area. The Community Greens represent an effort to bring back a taste of the beauty of an unspoiled Windsor landscape, and preserve the natural flora of the area for future generations to appreciate. These efforts will be environmentally sustainable, and will include perma-pave walkways, and rainwater collection systems.

A Community gathering and meeting place, the Community Greens at Assumption are a shared, diversified space where, “living comes naturally.” Through the preservation and improvements of the natural order, a focus on stewardship, rainwater harvesting and cleansing, and planting diversity, the new community greens will support and promote a sustainability goal.

International Gardens

The International Gardens proposed on site will be a testament to the international nature of the Windsor region. The settlement that became Windsor was gifted to the Europeans by the Huron tribe, and has over the years since its birth received immigrants from all over the world.

To reflect this, the garden showcases flags from several nations who are represented in the rich ethnic diversity that is our population. Diversity and understanding strengthen our community, making the International Garden an important symbol of our past, present, and future.

Mothers Garden

The Mothers Garden pays tribute to our mothers, by honouring and remembering their lives and memories. It is designed as an alcove of a mother’s outstretched arms, open to embrace her children. It will include a gentle water feature and open seating that will encourage families to gather to enjoy its beauty year round. All those who have felt a mother’s loving care may want to celebrate their life by remembering their Mother in a personally meaningful and symbolic way.

Our Lady of Assumption Niche Garden

The mission established in 1728 by Fr. Armand De La Richardie, the Jesuit missionary to the Hurons, was given the imposing title of “The Mission of Our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons of Detroit.” The Our Lady of Assumption Niche Garden will honour the namesake of that mission and the site where present day Assumption Church rests by recognizing and honouring her through dedications and story-telling within the landscape.

The Peace Garden

The Peace Garden will provide an opportunity for contemplative reflection devoted to important world issues and the promotion of universal peace.

Symbolizing the power of peace, the Peace Garden will use the universal language of the garden to encourage individuals in many lands to share peace in the garden and to support peace in the world.

The Michael J. McGivney Arrival Promenade

Arrival Promenade

Drawing from the inspiration of Father Michael J. McGivney, the arrival promenade will honour his legacy as an apostle to the young, protector of Christian family life and Founder of the Knights of Columbus. As we celebrate our history, the Arrival Promenade will welcome citizens and visitors alike to Our Lady of Assumption Church; the front door to the oldest parish west of Montreal in Canada, and will be a lasting devotion to Father McGivney and the Knights of Columbus.
